| To
be honest, when we use the word 'intranet' many
people think we mean 'internet'.
This is a common misunderstanding, so let's take
this opportunity to explain.
An
intranet is like a private web site. Only you and
your colleagues can see the content and nothing
ever leaves the building. The intranet lives on
a computer within your office, and you have full
control and varying levels of security without incurring
costs such as hosting or domain registration.
Companies
typically use intranets for several purposes, but
one main advantage is the ability to ensure everyone
uses the latest versions of letterheads, fax headers,
terms and conditions etc. when they converse with
clients. Your colleagues simply open Internet Explorer,
visit your intranet, and pull documents straight
onto their desktop.
An
intranet is definately the way to go for forward
thinking businesses as everything operates in real
time, and it is completely flexible and expandable.
Just think, the notice board in the kitchen could
be redundant - simply have a notice board and/or
discussion forum on your intranet! The possibilities
are endless, and completely under your control.
